From Elites to Beginners: there’s a course for you!

Unlike a fun run/walk not everyone does the same thing – courses vary depending on what class you run. Classes are based on age, gender, course length and degree of difficulty.  Scroll down to find out more. If you are still unsure what class to enter Contact Us.

What Class do I enter for the Oceania Championship Events?

Most people enter their correct age group (see below for explanation on age groups) so it’s mostly a matter of deciding on the level of difficulty – E, A, AS (“A Short”), B and for the little ones, Novice.

E – is for elite orienteers and is offered only in the open age class (M/W21). Only experienced and proven orienteers are eligible to run in the elites. Orienteers in this class will compete for the Oceania Orienteering Champion title.

A – is for fitter people looking for length and hard navigation. This is the championship class for all age groups apart from M/W21.  M/W20A is open to orienteers competing for the Oceania Junior Orienteering title. M/W16A and M/W18A is open to orienteers competing for the Oceania Youth Championship title.

AS – is for people looking for a shorter course but who still want a navigation challenge.

B – is for people who want to get some exercise but prefer easier navigation.

Novice – is for kids under 10 who would like mum or dad ("shadowed") to be there in case they get lost.

Age Groups

Age groups vary between the classes offered. Your age group depends on when you reach a given age: Entrants belong to the age group up to the end of the calendar year in which they reach the given age. Example: you are M/W14 the years you turn 13 and 14. Juniors (20 or younger). Open (21 – 34); Masters (turning 35 or older).

Masters are entitled to compete in younger classes down to and including 21. Example: the year you turn 45, you are M/W 45 but can run down in M/W40 or 35 or 21.

Under IOF and OA rules for Oceania, females are permitted to enter male classes.   Any competitor wishing to do this should firstly enter a suitable female class in Eventor and then use the contact form to request the class change.
